Frequently Asked
Is it free to list my trade business?
Yes — the Starter tier is completely free. You get a full public profile, searchable listing, and up to 10 booking requests per month. Paid tiers unlock unlimited bookings, featured placement, and advanced analytics.
How are contractors verified?
Contractors self-declare their trade license numbers (ESA, TSSA, TSSA Gas, CWB, etc.) upon registration. Our team cross-references submitted license numbers against Ontario regulatory databases. Verified badges are issued to providers who pass this check.
Can I book a contractor for emergency service?
Yes. Many contractors on BookYourTrades offer emergency service. When browsing the directory, filter by trade type and city, then review individual provider profiles — emergency availability and response times are listed on each profile.
What types of projects is BookYourTrades suited for?
BookYourTrades is built for commercial, industrial, and institutional (ICI) projects. This includes office buildings, retail, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, healthcare, hospitality, and municipal infrastructure. Residential projects are not the primary focus of this platform.
How does the booking system work for contractors?
When a client submits a booking request through your profile, it appears in your dashboard under "Pending." You review the job details, then Confirm or Decline. Confirmed appointments appear in your schedule. You can also mark jobs as Completed once done.
Can I list multiple locations or trade types?
The Professional tier supports a single listing with multiple service areas. The Enterprise tier supports multiple distinct business locations or trade types under one account. Contact us to set up an Enterprise account.

How to Get Into the Trades in Ontario

A complete guide for high school students and career-changers. Everything you need to know about apprenticeships, schooling, Red Seal certification, and launching a trades career in Ontario.

The Best-Kept Career Secret in Canada

Trades careers in Ontario offer exceptional wages, job security, and the ability to run your own business — without a four-year degree.

💰
$80K–$120K+ Salaries
Journeyman electricians, plumbers, and pipefitters routinely earn $85–$120K+ per year in Ontario. Master tradespeople running their own shops earn significantly more.
🏗️
Earn While You Learn
Unlike university, apprentices earn a wage from day one — starting around $18–$25/hr and increasing each year. No six-figure student debt. You graduate earning full journeyman wages.
📈
Critical Shortage
Ontario is projected to need 100,000+ new tradespeople by 2030. Skilled tradespeople have some of the lowest unemployment rates of any profession in Canada.

Step-by-Step: From High School to Journeyman

1
Explore in High School
Ontario's Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program lets students earn trade-related certifications and co-op hours in Grade 11–12. Many school boards also offer dual credit programs at local colleges. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) lets Grade 11–12 students register as apprentices and start accumulating hours while still in school.
2
Find an Employer / Sponsor
You must be employed by a licensed contractor in your trade before you can register as an apprentice. This is called finding a "sponsoring employer." Browse the BookYourTrades Jobs Board for companies actively hiring apprentices. Union halls (IBEW, UA, SMWIA) also recruit and place apprentices — contact your local directly.
3
Register Your Apprenticeship
Once you have a sponsoring employer, both you and your employer register with the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) through the Skills Development Fund. You'll receive a Training Agreement that outlines the hours, in-school requirements, and wages for each year of your apprenticeship. Registration is free for the apprentice.
4
Complete In-School Training
Apprenticeships combine on-the-job hours with mandatory in-school blocks at a college or apprenticeship training centre. For example, an electrician apprenticeship (309A) requires 9,000 hours over ~5 years with annual 8-week in-school blocks. In-school training is covered by Employment Insurance (EI) — apply through Service Canada before your school block starts.
5
Write Your Certificate of Qualification (C of Q)
After completing your hours and in-school requirements, you write the Certificate of Qualification exam through the Ontario College of Trades. Passing this exam makes you a Journeyman in your trade. For compulsory trades (like electrician or plumber), this is legally required before you can work independently.
6
Red Seal (Optional) & Running Your Own Business
The Red Seal (Interprovincial Standards) exam is optional but allows you to work in any province without re-certifying. After gaining journeyman experience, many tradespeople pursue a Master certification (required to pull permits in many trades) and eventually start their own company. List your new business on BookYourTrades to start getting commercial leads from day one.

Terms of Service

Last updated: January 1, 2025  |  Governing law: Ontario, Canada

⚠️ Key Point: BookYourTrades is a directory and communication platform only. We are not a contractor, employer, or party to any agreement between users and contractors. Read Sections 4 and 5 carefully.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using BookYourTrades (the "Platform"), operated by BookYourTrades Inc. ("we", "us", or "our"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, you must not use the Platform.

2. Nature of the Platform

BookYourTrades is an online directory and communication tool that facilitates introductions between businesses seeking trade services ("Clients") and independent trade contractors ("Contractors"). We do not provide trade services, employ Contractors, supervise work, or guarantee outcomes. All Contractors listed are independent professionals who operate their own businesses.

3. User Responsibilities

Clients agree to:

  • Independently verify a Contractor's licences, certifications, insurance (including WSIB clearance), and references before engaging them.
  • Enter all contracts, scopes of work, and payment agreements directly with the Contractor — not through BookYourTrades.
  • Not rely on the Platform as a substitute for professional due diligence.

Contractors agree to:

  • Represent themselves and their qualifications truthfully and accurately.
  • Maintain all required licences, certifications, and insurance required by applicable law.
  • Not use the Platform to engage in fraudulent, misleading, or unlawful conduct.

4. No Liability for Contractor Services

BookYourTrades is not liable — in any way — for the quality, safety, legality, timeliness, or outcome of any services performed by a Contractor. This includes, without limitation: incomplete work, property damage, personal injury, cost overruns, scheduling failures, disputes over payment, contractor no-shows, licensing violations, or any other issue arising from the contractor-client relationship. Any dispute arising from work arranged through the Platform is strictly between the Client and the Contractor.

5. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by Ontario law, BookYourTrades Inc., its directors, officers, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages. Our maximum aggregate liability for any claim related to the Platform shall not exceed the total fees you paid to us in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim, or $100 CAD — whichever is greater.

6. No Warranty

The Platform is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" without warranty of any kind. We do not warrant that listings are accurate, complete, or current; that Contractors are licensed, insured, or competent; or that the Platform will be uninterrupted or error-free.

7. Reviews and User Content

Reviews submitted on the Platform represent the opinions of the reviewing party only. BookYourTrades does not verify the accuracy of reviews. By submitting a review, you grant us a non-exclusive licence to display it on the Platform. We reserve the right to remove any review that violates these Terms or applicable law.

8. Governing Law & Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any dispute shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ontario. You agree to attempt good-faith resolution before commencing legal proceedings.

9. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms at any time by posting a revised version on the Platform. Continued use of the Platform after such posting constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

Contractor Disclaimer

What BookYourTrades is — and isn't

📋 Plain-English Summary

BookYourTrades helps you find and contact trade contractors. We don't do the work, supervise the work, or guarantee anything about it. If something goes wrong with a job — the price, the timing, the quality — that's between you and the contractor. We are not in the middle of that relationship, and we are not liable for it.

BookYourTrades is a Directory — Not a Contractor

We provide an online directory where trade contractors list their businesses and where Clients can contact them. We do not perform any trade work, supervise any projects, manage payments, or act as an agent for any contractor or client.

Contractors are Independent Professionals

Every contractor listed on BookYourTrades is an independent professional or business. They are not employees, agents, or representatives of BookYourTrades. We have no control over the quality of their work, their availability, their pricing, or whether they fulfil a contract.

We Do Not Guarantee Job Outcomes

BookYourTrades makes no guarantees about: whether a contractor will respond to your request; whether work will be completed on time or on budget; whether the quality of work will meet your expectations; or whether the contractor holds current licences, certifications, or insurance. Always verify these directly with the contractor before work begins.

Your Checklist Before Hiring Any Contractor

  • ✅ Confirm their trade licence is current and valid (check with the Ontario College of Trades, ECRA, or TSSA).
  • ✅ Request a valid WSIB Clearance Certificate.
  • ✅ Confirm they carry general liability insurance ($2M minimum recommended for commercial work).
  • ✅ Get a written quote and scope of work before any work begins.
  • ✅ Check references from past clients.
  • ✅ Never pay the full amount upfront — use milestone-based payments.

If Something Goes Wrong

Disputes between Clients and Contractors are entirely private matters. BookYourTrades cannot mediate, arbitrate, or intervene. You may report a fraudulent or misleading listing to us at hello@bookyourtrades.com and we will investigate; however, reporting to us does not create any legal obligation on our part.

This disclaimer supplements our full Terms of Service. For legal advice specific to your situation, please consult a qualified Ontario lawyer.
